JJ and Michelle
This week I am going to talk about how I was able to light a scene for JJ and Michelle. JJ is one of my closest friends from home. He had been planning on asking Michelle to marry him for 6 months. When the day came he asked me if I would take pictures of their special moment.
I knew this would be a hard task because of the lighting conditions at the time the pictures needed to be taken. He wanted me to take the pictures after he proposed on the boat at about 9PM.In dark conditions it is always going to be hard to focus due to low contrast.
How did I solve these issues? The solution was the on camera flash stopped down 2 stops. This can be done in the camera’s menu settings for the flash. The reason to do this is so your subjects don’t have too bright of highlights and the black are too black.
The way I fixed the focusing problem was to have one of my friends to hold a small flashlight to shine on the subject’s faces so that I could grab focus. This was a huge help because the first 4 or 5 frames I took were severely out of focus whether I used manual focused or autofocused.
In all I was very pleased with how the pictures turned out and I think JJ and Michelle are as well. I wish them the best in their engagement period.

Excellent photograph. Good advice on the lighting.
